The Week 13 edition of Monday Night Football features two teams well-versed in the ways of playing at home, as the New Orleans Saints make the trip to CenturyLink Field to take on the Seattle Seahawks.
Seattle is a stellar 10-1 and has plenty of momentum, with six straight wins. However, the Seahawks are not without their serious issues heading into a contest with major playoff-seeding implications.
New Orleans is right behind at 9-2 and currently the top team in the NFC South, although a loss Monday would allow Carolina officially back in the conversation.
Both sides have plenty of hurdles to jump in order to secure comfortable footing when the playoffs roll around.
Can Seattle Overcome Loss of Important Secondary Pieces?
There is a slight alleged rift in Seattle right now between certain groups of players after cornerbacks Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmond were handed suspensions from the NFL per ESPN:
Golden Tate calls cornerbacks Walter Thurmond and Brandon Browner “selfish”
— ESPN Monday Night (@ESPNMondayNight) November 27, 2013
Regardless of how things play out in the locker room, the focus here must be on how this impacts the Seahawks on the field.
With Drew Brees and the high-octane Saints offense coming to town, now was not exactly the best time for Seattle to lose members of its secondary.
Sure, Richard Sherman will be on the field, but he will be easily avoided by the cerebral Brees. Seattle has the No. 2 pass defense in the NFL with an average of 180.4 yards allowed per game, but that rank may take a significant nosedive after Monday.
Will New Orleans Fold Away from the Dome?
As mentioned, the Saints and Seahawks know a thing or two about the value of home games.
New Orleans is undefeated this year at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome but has dropped two contests on the road.
Of course, Seattle is very good at home, too:
The @Seahawks have won 13 straight home games, longest active streak in the NFL. The last team to win in Seattle was SF in 2011 Week 16.
— NFL on ESPN (@ESPNNFL) November 30, 2013
This matchup clearly favors the Seahawks. One has to wonder if Brees and the offense will be as effective in a noisy environment rather than a hushed dome. New Orleans escaped a noisy dome in Atlanta in Week 12 with a 17-13 win, but going to Seattle is a different beast entirely.
If the Saints cannot win, they may end up taking another trip to CenturyLink Field in the playoffs.
Can Russell Wilson Overcome the Odds at Home?
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson was extremely effective in the month of November on his way to six passing touchdowns and two interceptions. As Fox Sports illustrates, he was one of the top passers in the league:
Highest Passer Rating in November: Nick Foles 152.8 Russell Wilson 123.2 Mike Glennon 119.7 Tom Brady 115.0
— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) December 1, 2013
Once again, Wilson will be without receiver Percy Harvin, who sounds likely to miss the game per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
Source: #Seahawks WR Percy Harvin’s surgically repaired hip flared up again. He’s seeing doctors today, but his status for MNF is in doubt.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) November 30, 2013
Not good timing on Harvin’s part, so Wilson will have to continue to utilize his other playmakers on offense and lean on Marshawn Lynch and the running game.
New Orleans is a stellar defensive team that ranks No. 3 in the league against the pass with an average of 198 yards allowed per game. If Wilson is going to keep his positive streak alive and all but assure his team plays at home in the playoffs, he will have to do so in the face of a great defense.
1. LEASH THE BEAST. Seattle has the third-best rushing attack in the league (147.9 yards per game) and it’s no secret what the Seahawks are going to do: They’re going to look to pound the New Orleans Saints on the ground with running back Marshawn Lynch (925 yards and nine touchdowns on 208 carries). Saints defenders, and all of their fans, are quite familiar with what Lynch can and will do if he’s allowed to shift into “Beast Mode.” So containing him, and forcing quarterback Russell Wilson to throw the football, is Priority No. 1. Forcing teams to be one-dimensional is every defense’s goal, but it applies even more so with the Seahawks. The Saints have chopped up the running games of Dallas, San Francisco and Atlanta in the last three games, limiting each to fewer than 100 yards rushing. That’s the kind of result they’ll need to take down the Seahawks.
2. HUSTLE FOR RUSSELL. Speaking of Wilson, here’s an interesting fact: The Seahawks’ second-year quarterback has been sacked more times (29) than has Saints quarterback Drew Brees (23), even though Wilson has attempted 158 fewer passes (304) than has Brees (462). What does it all mean? It means that the Saints, who are tied for the NFL lead with 37 sacks and lead the league in sacks per pass play, should be able to get hands on Wilson. Wilson is mobile, enough to have 409 rushing yards on 72 carries. But Seattle’s offensive line obviously hasn’t been a brick wall in terms of protection, and keep in mind that Wilson has fumbled eight times this season, and lost five of them.
3. GROUND ‘EM DOWN. As heralded as Seattle’s defense is, the Seahawks haven’t had all that much success stopping the run. Opponents have 1,242 yards against them this season, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. The Saints, who have a renewed zest in their running game, have averaged five yards per carry, on 86 carries, in the three games leading up to this one. Balance always helps and New Orleans has been better balanced the last three games than at any time this season, which explains how the Saints were able to win three games in 12 days. Inclement weather in Seattle won’t prevent New Orleans from throwing – the Saints are going to do what they do best – but if the statistics are correct, they should be able to lean on the run for support.
4. CAREFUL, DREW. Considering the amount of times Brees has thrown the football this season (439), having just eight interceptions is outstanding. Seattle, though, invites the attempts. The Seahawks are second in the league in pass defense (they allow 180.4 per game) and their 16 interceptions are tied for the league lead. The Legion of Boom, as the secondary has labeled itself, only has allowed 12 touchdown passes and opponents complete just 58.6 percent of their passes. This will be a strength vs. strength battle, which could be swayed by the presence of …
5. JIMMY GRAHAM. Doesn’t it always seem to come back to Graham, one way or the other? The Seahawks may be tempted to copy New England’s defensive gameplan against the Saints’ unparalleled tight end – namely, put a great cover corner on him (maybe the loquacious Richard Sherman) and take their chances one-on-one against the other receivers. That worked for New England. But the Saints now have a healthy Marques Colston, a healthy Lance Moore, an improved Kenny Stills and a sneaky-productive Robert Meachem, not to mention Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles out of the backfield. The Saints figure to win their share of one-on-one battles with that corps and if they win enough of them, they could leave Seattle tied with the Seahawks for having the best record in the NFC, and owning the tiebreak over Seattle.

New Orleans Saints at Seattle Seahawks: What to Watch

Seattle — If the New Orleans Saints or Seattle Seahawks have any tension or anxiety about their upcoming matchup, one certainly wouldn’t know it from their public statements.
That’s no surprise. NFL teams aren’t usually keen on the idea of putting too much emphasize on one matchup in a 16-game schedule.
And that’s the road the Saints (9-2) have taken as they prepare for the final stretch of the regular season. First up is the Seahawks (10-1), who they’ll face at CenturyLink Field at 7:30 p.m. CST on “Monday Night Football.”
On the outside? Business as usual.
“That’s how you treat it,” said Saints coach Sean Payton. “After this game, we’ll treat the next week the same week. “
And while Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave the Saints a healthy dose of respect, he had a similar sentiment.
“They will pose us all of the challenges of anybody we’ve played, so we’re going to have to play at our best, which is what we try to do every week,” he said. “So if you’re asking me if this is a bigger game than the others, no it isn’t.
“It’s the biggest game we can possibly play this week, and we’re going to try to make the most of it.”
But there’s no doubt what the implications of Monday mean.
It’s one of the best late-season “Monday Night Football” matchups in history. The combined winning percentage of .864 is the second highest for a post-Thanksgiving Monday night game. The only one to top that was a 1990 game between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants, who were both 10-1.
And it’s a time slot in which the Saints thrive. They’re 11-2 on “Monday Night Football” since 2006, their last loss coming in 2008.
More important than the statistics is what the outcome will mean for the postseason. When the dust settles, the playoff picture might suddenly be a little clearer.
What’s at stake if the regular season were to end this week?
The difference between the No. 1 and No. 2 seed in the playoffs. More important: the possibility of home-field advantage throughout.
Seattle is New Orleans’ biggest threat to get that nod. If the Seahawks beat the Saints, not only will they have a sizable lead on the other teams in the conference but will also own tiebreakers over the Saints and Carolina Panthers, who they beat in Week 1.
And for these two teams, the importance of home-field advantage can’t be overstated.
The Saints are 4-0 at home (1-0 on a neutral field) and 0-3 on the road in postseason games since 2006.
They turned the ball over 10 times in those three losses to the Chicago Bears (39-14 in 2007), Seahawks (41-36 in 2011) and San Francisco 49ers (36-32 in 2012).
They had only four turnovers in their four playoff wins at home.
Seattle is 3-0 at home in the playoffs and 1-4 in away games during that timespan.
They have not lost a home game, in the playoffs or regular season, since Dec 24, 2011.
One of the reasons for that can be attributed to the “12th Man” at CenturyLink Field. At one point, the venue held the world record for the loudest outdoor sports stadium.
Seattle possessing a distinct home-field advantage compared to other NFL teams? That’s not a fabrication, said Saints safety Roman Harper.
“There was definitely a noticeable difference,” Harper recalled of the crowd noise in 2011 when the Saints lost in the NFC wild-card round. “And the fans are pretty smart about it, too. They know when to yell. …
“They’re rowdy, they’re a great fan base.”
Harper hasn’t played at Seattle many times, but said he’d still probably give it the nod as the loudest NFL stadium in which he’s played.
Come playoff time, that’ll no be ratcheted up a bit.
The Saints can’t afford to look too far ahead with two games against the Panthers still on the schedule. Carolina has won eight straight, including Sunday’s victory over the Buccaneers, and is only a half game behind the Saints in the NFC South.
But that just makes the margin for error even smaller for the Saints, despite getting off to their best start since their Super Bowl-winning season in 2009.
The challenge with facing Seattle is more than just preparation for the elements, which is forecasted to be cold and rainy with possible snow.
For one, the Saints will have to deal with running back Marshawn Lynch, who gashed them for a breathtaking 67-yard touchdown run in their playoff meeting.
“Somebody please tackle him so we have a chance to win this game,” Saints quarterback Drew Brees said of the play during which Lynch broke about eight tackles. “It was an unbelievable run. It might go down in history as one of the better runs, especially in the playoffs, that we’ve ever seen.”
“We got our work cut out for us,” said defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. “This a well-coached team. They’ve got a hired killer back there running the ball. This is what you get, I guess, this time of year and this will be a hell of a challenge.”
The Saints’ passing game will catch a bit of a break with Seattle cornerbacks Walter Thurmond and Brandon Browner out. Thurmond was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, while Browner is sidelined with a groin injury.
But the Saints will still have to contend with Richard Sherman, one of the best cornerbacks in the league and a major reason Seattle has the No. 2-ranked pass defense.
“Their secondary is full of a bunch of ball hawks,” Brees said. “They are guys that are around the ball all the time. Balls are getting tipped up, they have great ball skills, great awareness. That’s what their defense thrives on.”
And for the Seahawks, they’ll be facing a Saints defense that’s No. 5 in the league in points allowed (17.8 per game).
“It will be a great game,” said Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. “It’s Monday night, a lot of lights and all that kind of stuff at the same time. It doesn’t matter where we play at.”
A look at the Seahawks Week 13 game against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night, including five matchups that could impact the outcome:
When: Monday, 5:40 p.m., CenturyLink Field
Records: Seahawks 10-1 and first in the NFC West after their pre-bye week 41-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 17; Saints 9-2 and first in the NFC South after their 17-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 21
Playoff implications: The Seahawks can clinch a playoff berth with a win and a loss by either the 49ers or Cardinals on Sunday. The winner of Monday night’s game also will hold the top seed in the NFC with four games remaining
TV: ESPN and KONG 6/16, with Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and Lisa Salters
Radio: 710 ESPN and 97.3 KIRO FM, with Steve Raible, Warren Moon and Jen Mueller
Rest of the West: Cardinals (7-4) at Eagles; Rams (5-6) at 49ers (7-4) on Sunday
Matchup microscope
Seahawks QB Russell Wilson vs. Saints QB Drew Brees: No one-on-one matchup here, just the one matchup that plays most directly into who emerges as the top seed in the NFC as the regular season moves into its final four games. Brees has put the ball up 439 times already, with only the Lions’ Matthew Stafford (465), Broncos’ Peyton Manning (445) and Falcons’ Matt Ryan (443) throwing more passes entering Week 13. Wilson, meanwhile, is doing whatever’s needed to just win, baby. He is 13-0 at CenturyLink Field and his 21-6 record since joining the Seahawks as a third-round draft choice last year gives him the highest winning percentage (.778) of any active QB in the league. Then there’s the whole “too-small” connection and the fact that Wilson has used Brees as a role model for how to approach the game even more than how to play the game.
One to watch
Seahawks No. 2-ranked pass defense vs. Saints TE Jimmy Graham: Without right cornerback Brandon Browner (groin injury) and backup Walter Thurmond (suspended), the Seahawks are stretching the next-man-up mantra fiber-option thin as Byron Maxwell steps in for Browner and Thurmond on the right side and Jeremy Lane takes over for Thurmond as the nickel back. But containing the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Graham is going to be a full-unit task anyway. It will start with Chris Clemons and Cliff Avril, among others, being able to apply pressure on Brees. It will continue with SS Kam Chancellor, LBs Bruce Irvin, K.J. Wright and Bobby Wagner and even CB Richard Sherman matching up against Graham. It also will involve FS Earl Thomas helping out. It needs to end with the Seahawks having the same kind of success they did against the Falcons’ Tony Gonzalez (three catches for 29 yards) and 49ers’ Vernon Davis (three for 20).
Fun to watch
Seahawks FS Earl Thomas vs. Saints S Kenny Vaccaro: The eyes of Texas, as well as the rest of the football nation, will be upon this pair of former Longhorns. Vaccaro was the 15th pick overall in this year’s NFL Draft. Thomas was the 14th pick overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. Vaccaro is third on the Saints’ defense with 68 tackles. Thomas leads the Seahawks with 75. Vaccaro has one interception. Thomas is tied for second in the NFL with four. But Thomas also has been voted to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons and was voted All-Pro last season. Suffice it to say, the former Longhorn safety who has a greater impact on the game will help determine which team wins the game.
One tough task
The Saints’ No. 14-ranked run defense vs. Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch: OLB Junior Galette, ILB Ramon Humber and S Roman Harper are the only Saints left from the 2010 defense that Lynch went over, around and through on his electrifying 67-yard touchdown run to ice the Seahawks’ wild-card playoff victory at CenturyLink Field. And only Galette is starting for new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. But everyone has seen what transpired on the run that helped eliminate the defending Super Bowl champions in the first round, and against a Seahawks team that won its division with a 7-9 record. As Saints coach Sean Payton said this week, “I didn’t need to go back and watch it. It was probably shown for a good month on every type of highlight film.” This season, Lynch is fourth in the NFL with 925 yards and averaging 4.4 yards per carry. The Saints are allowing averages of 111.9 rushing yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry.
Don’t overlook
The second quarter: You can’t win a game in the second quarter, as Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is fond of saying. But the second quarter has been pivotal in the Seahawks and Saints combining for 19 wins. The Saints have scored more points in the second quarter (104) than any other quarter. So have the Seahawks (97). The flipside to this is that the Saints have allowed more points in the second quarter (78) than any other quarter, and so have the Seahawks (88) – more than twice as many as any other quarter.
Worth noting
The Saints lead the regular-season series 6-5, including victories in the past two meetings – 28-17 in Seattle in 2007 and 34-19 in New Orleans in 2010. But the Seahawks won the last meeting, that 41-36 victory in the wild-card playoff game after the 2010 season. … As good as the Seahawks have been in games before their bye weeks (19-6), they’re 6-18 in games the week after their bye. … Brees has a nine-game winning streak on “Monday Night Football,” when he’s completed 71.8 percent of passes (224 of 312) for 2,880 yards, with 28 TD passes and five interceptions, for a 123.6 passer rating. … Wilson is 2-0 on “Monday Night Football,” with a 107.7 passer rating. … Graham leads all NFL tight ends in receptions (65), receiving yards (946) and TD catches (11). … The Seahawks’ Golden Tate is the only player in the NFL with 600 receiving yards and 400 punt return yards. … The Seahawks lead the NFL with 26 takeaways and share the lead with 16 interceptions. … They are 24-3 under Carroll when winning the turnover battle. … ILB Curtis Lofton leads the Saints with 96 tackles, while fellow ILB and former Seahawks’ leading tackler David Hawthorne is second with 82.
SEATTLE — In the bigger picture of the top two teams in the NFC meeting Monday night and what could be at stake in the post-season, getting a victory would be of more importance for New Orleans.
Watch a breakdown of the Seahawks-Saints matchup
As much as Drew Brees and Sean Payton have worked to change the perception of a franchise that for most of its history has struggled, there is one reality about the post-season still staring New Orleans in the face: The Saints have never won a playoff game on the road.
While nothing can be clinched by the outcome Monday between the Saints (9-2) and Seahawks (10-1), New Orleans seems to understand a loss likely means the road through the NFC playoffs will go through Seattle.
“Both teams understand what we got ahead of us, what this game means to both teams,” New Orleans safety Roman Harper said. “It’s huge, and if we can get this one, we understand what it sets up for us to be able to do. It puts us in position to accomplish some things we’ve been talking about all year long. All these things are starting to build up and we’re right in the place we want to be. It’s a great opportunity for us. We’ve got a tough one on the road and it will be a great matchup for us.”

Seattle understands the home-field importance, too. While the Seahawks showed last year they can win on the road in the post-season, Seattle’s only Super Bowl trip came after having home-field advantage in the playoffs in the 2005 season.
A win over the Saints would leave Seattle two games up on everyone in the NFC with tiebreakers in hand.
“It feels good just with the way our team is performing. Everybody is playing together, everybody is playing for one another, and everybody is executing down the stretch,” Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said. “Nobody is getting nervous or starting to look ahead or looking past anyone.
Here are five things to watch in the Monday night showdown:
KNOCK OFF THE RUST: The last time Seattle was on the field, it had its offensive line fully intact for the first time since the first quarter of Week 2 with the returns of Russell Okung, Breno Giacomini and Max Unger from injuries. Wilson was sacked only once, but the line was admittedly rusty in protections.
The Seahawks better be at their best against the Saints, who lead the NFL with 37 sacks. Cameron Jordan tops the Saints’ pass rush with 9 1/2 sacks, and the Seahawks know a variety of pressures are coming from defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan.
“He does like to change his plan week to week so it’s a little bit harder to zero in on what he’s going to do, but it’s always aggressive and always tough,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.
Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
BEAST MODE: Marshawn Lynch’s 67-yard TD run against the Saints in the playoffs three seasons ago has been viewed over a million times on YouTube. It was a career-highlight run for Lynch, but his ability to regularly get 4 or 5 yards against the current Saints on Monday night could be critical. New Orleans’ run defence is 25th in the NFL, but the Saints are so often playing with a lead that their ability to stop the run becomes moot as opponents try to rally.
If Lynch and the Seahawks can control possession and convert drives into points, the Saints’ struggles with stopping the run could be exposed.
CORNERBACK CONCERN: Seattle was without starting cornerback Brandon Browner due to a groin injury. His replacement, Walter Thurmond, was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The Seahawks will face the most prolific passing offence in the NFC with backup Byron Maxwell starting opposite Sherman and second-year player Jeremy Lane seeing significant playing time.
“They are going to come in and play the same type of technique,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “You don’t see something change differently in regards to how they play a certain coverage or how they play a technique.”
GRAHAM’S GREATNESS: Jimmy Graham has already tied the NFL record for most 100-yard receiving games in a season by a tight end with six. The one time this season Graham was held in check this season was against New England. The Patriots put cornerback Aqib Talib on Graham almost exclusively on him and it worked. Graham was targeted six times and went without a catch. It was the first time since his rookie season that Graham was shut out.
Could Seattle follow suit and use Sherman on Graham?
HARVIN HEALTH: Just when it seemed the Seahawks were getting fully healthy, they go into Monday’s game with wide receiver Percy Harvin doubtful due to lingering soreness in his surgically repaired hip. Harvin was in on 19 offensive plays and two kickoff returns in Week 11 against Minnesota, but soreness from that game has lingered.
If Harvin can’t go, the Seahawks would have just four healthy receivers on the active roster.
It’s maybe the best Monday Night Football game of the year, it’s a possible NFC Championship Game preview, and it’s a game that could go a long way toward deciding the top overall seed in the NFC. You know, just your average New Orleans Saints-Seattle Seahawks Week 13 game. The two teams face off in Seattle at 8:30 p.m. ET Monday night, and there will be plenty of fantasy-interesting players to keep an eye on:
Saints
Start in every league: Drew Brees, Pierre Thomas, Jimmy Graham, Garrett Hartley
Start if you’re desperate: Darren Sproles, Marques Colston, Defense/special teams
Bench: Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson, Kenny Stills, Lance Moore, Robert Meachem
DIrty little secret: Brees is averaging 26.8 fantasy points in his six home games, but only 17 in his five road outings. Yeah, no one is benching Brees anywhere, but it’s something to be aware of, with the Saints playing in the tough road confines of Seattle. … Thomas has pretty obviously supplanted Sproles as the team’s top running back, and even against a tough defense, he ought to get his. … Were you thinking of benching Graham? Don’t be dumb. … Hartley has been a top-10 fantasy kicker, with three or more field goals in four different games, and his rough streak (four misses in a three-week span) seems to have been put to bed with four straight successful kicks.
Sproles appears likely to return to action Monday, and his diverse abilities always make him intriguing, but he’s only had double-digit fantasy points three times all season; he hasn’t scored higher than six otherwise. In PPR leagues, he will always-and-forever have value, but in standard, tread lightly. … Colston has finally started looking like the receiver he’s supposed to be, but he’s still only 45th among fantasy wide receivers, and only has two touchdowns on the year. Against a stout defense, he might struggle. … The Saints’ defense has been No. 8 in the NFL, and has been moderately matchup-proof, but the Seahawks don’t give up many points to defenses.
With Sproles back and apparently healthy, Ingram and Robinson are relegated to afterthoughts. … The same basically goes for Stills, Moore, and Meachem, who will be behind Graham, Colston, Sproles, and Thomas in looks.
Seahawks
Start in every league: Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Steven Hauschka, Defense/special teams
Start if you’re desperate: …
Bench: Percy Harvin, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Zach Miller
It certainly looks, through almost two seasons of his career, that Wilson is matchup-proof, with double-digit fantasy points in every game but one this year. His fantasy owners had better hope so, as the Saints allow the third-fewest points to opposing quarterbacks on the season. … Lynch has been the No. 3 running back in fantasy this year, averaging 15.2 fantasy points a game. Start and enjoy. … Ranking even better at his position is Hauschka, who has converted multiple field goals nine times in 11 games this season to come in as the No. 2 kicker. … Even facing a good offense like New Orleans’ isn’t enough to keep the Seahawks’ defense from must-start status. The unit might struggle with the recently announced suspensions and injuries, but you still run them out there for now.
Harvin was downgraded to doubtful on Saturday, and with this being a Monday game, there’s just no way to use him at all. Far too risky. … Harvin’s return really hurts the fantasy values of anyone else that catches passes in a Seahawks uniform — Tate becomes a matchup play at best, while Baldwin, Kearse, and Miller are only even ownable in the deepest of leagues.
